EvenUp and the Future of Legal AI: Faster, Smarter, Fairer

From research to resolutions, generative models and companies like EvenUp are transforming hours of legal work into minutes, opening the door to tech-driven justice.

Generative AI is rapidly moving beyond broad-purpose chatbots to reshape highly specialized, high‑stakes industries. Nowhere is that shift more evident than in the legal sector, where case outcomes often hinge on massive volumes of unstructured data—medical records, depositions, police reports—and the scarce time of trained attorneys. After two decades of “pen‑and‑paper to spreadsheet” software upgrades, the profession is entering a phase where AI can help deliver the work itself: drafting documents, summarizing evidence, and surfacing the “next best” action without human first drafts.

The implications are profound. Law firms that once purchased software primarily to track matters and automate forms are now allocating budget for systems that assist in generating polished documents, recommend strategy, and unlock settlement value. As legal tech buyers move from incremental productivity gains to end‑to‑end automation, vertical AI companies are carving out defensible positions by combining proprietary data, domain‑expert teams, and purpose‑built models.

We believe four traits separate the leaders from the noise: access to rich, unstructured data; a focus on workflows handled by scarce expert labor; proprietary datasets that create durable moats; and founding teams with deep vertical credibility. Solutions that meet those criteria are already pushing the boundaries of what legal professionals can deliver.

EvenUp’s Latest Releases: AI Drafts, Smart Workflows, and Medical Bill Summary

EvenUp illustrates how targeted AI can close the justice gap for personal injury (PI) victims while boosting firm economics. With Lightspeed having backed EvenUp in their Series C in August 2023, it’s been a delight to see their progress.

When we first invested in EvenUp, the company was taking advantage of LLMs to solve one of the most labor-intensive jobs-to-be-done of personal injury lawyers—the drafting of demand letters. Fast forward to today, EvenUp’s Claims Intelligence Platform™ is now supporting lawyers during the entire lifecycle of a case. Trained on hundreds of thousands of injury cases and millions of medical visits, the platform’s new AI Drafts Suite drafts demand letters, medical summaries, and complaints in minutes, adapting to each firm’s unique tone, structure, and strategy. These tasks once consumed several hours.

EvenUp’s AI Drafts Suite draws directly from case files to develop comprehensive drafts in minutes.

And speed is just the start. Using a combination of EvenUp’s proprietary dataset and a firm’s internal operating procedures, their Smart Workflows product provides data-driven recommendations throughout the case lifecycle, including optimal demand timing and client treatment follow-ups. This helps firms avoid delays and maximize settlement potential.

Recently, EvenUp also added Medical Bill Summary, saving firms hours of manual bill tracking through automated charge amounts.

Real-World Impact

More than 1,500 PI firms now use the tool, accounting for $7 billion in claims to date and recapturing hundreds of millions in potential payouts otherwise left on the table. Moreover, firms adopting EvenUp have tripled drafting output and cut average settlement timelines by a month, without adding headcount.

By shifting attorney time from compiling evidence to shaping strategy, these AI-driven workflows are positioned to yield faster, often larger, recoveries for clients.

How Lightspeed is Looking Ahead

Personal injury law is only one example of how domain‑specific AI is redefining professional services. From claims processing in insurance to clinical notes in healthcare and due diligence in financial services, vertical intelligence platforms are turning once‑manual workflows into data‑driven engines of speed, accuracy, and access.

As the broader landscape matures, we believe the next wave of winners will pair proprietary data with deep domain insight, delivering not just software but tangible results that move the practice of law forward.
