India’s First Consumer Edtech IPO: Celebrating PhysicsWallah’s Public Market Debut
Today marks a moment for India’s education sector: PhysicsWallah has become the country’s first consumer edtech company to go public. We’re thrilled to celebrate this historic milestone with Alakh Pandey, Prateek Maheshwari, and the entire PW team.
From a whiteboard in Prayagraj to 100 million subscribers
PW’s story is one of grit, reach, and entrepreneurial spirit. In 2016, with little more than a basic camera and a dusty whiteboard in Prayagraj, Alakh started uploading free JEE prep lectures to YouTube. Over time, he built one of the largest educational communities–with millions of YouTube subscribers. That reach wasn’t manufactured; it was earned. To this day, Alakh and his team try to read every comment and adapt content to students’ evolving and real needs.
The impact extends beyond numbers. Across India—from farmers’ children in Kashmir to government employees’ children in West Bengal—PW has enabled students from many socioeconomic backgrounds to access education and pursue careers of their choice, including engineers, chartered accountants, lawyers, and doctors.
Rewriting India’s consumer playbook
With over 36 million students on its platform, we believe PW has become a market player by focusing on four interconnected principles:
Organic Community at Scale: With nearly 100 million YouTube subscribers, PW has built one of the largest organic customer acquisition engines. This changes the fundamental economics of consumer businesses—authentic content and community have replaced expensive paid marketing.
Value Pricing as Strategy: Affordable pricing isn’t just social good—it’s the key to building large addressable markets.
Comprehensive Course Coverage: PW serves the spectrum of outcome-based learning: competitive exams, foundational school programs, and post-graduate upskilling. The company delivers across online, offline, and hybrid formats, with brand resonance spanning multiple curricula and exams.
AI-Powered Personalization: PW leverages generative AI to provide step-by-step solutions, personalized learning plans, and real-time support–bringing adaptive technology to students across price points and geographies.
Conviction-based capital with a global perspective
At Lightspeed, we back founders with long-term vision—whether at inception or inflection. We invest globally but with local insight, having supported IPOs across the U.S., Europe, and India over the last two decades.
Our partnership with PW has taught us as much as we’ve contributed. We’ve gained deeper insight into building profitable businesses for India’s value-conscious consumers—lessons that apply across sectors and stages.
PW’s IPO proves that India’s edtech sector, when built on genuine value delivery rather than growth-at-any-cost, can create sustainable, impactful businesses.
We’re honoured to support Alakh and Prateek as they continue changing millions of lives.
